Netflix has released a preview of its new upcoming cartoon series called “Tuca and Bertie.” The show is starring Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish voicing “bird women.” The animated series was created by Lisa Hanawalt who was a supervising producer on Bojack Horseman. The show is about the friendship between two 30-year-old bird women who live in the same apartment, according to The Muse. Tuca and Bertie will premiere on May 3rd, 2019 on Netflix.
Ali Wong is a stand up comic, writer, and actor. She will voice Bertie, an anxious, daydreaming songbird. “I mean in a lot of ways it kind of does mirror us because Tiffany is out there and about. She’s like fun and not repressed,” Wong said. “And I’m kind of a recluse and I’m a homebody. I’m like the boring person who is at home with my husband and my kids.”
While Haddish who is also an actor and a stand up comic will voice Tuca, a cocky care-free toucan. “It’s a real cartoon and I love that my character got ass,” Haddish said.
Lisa Hanawalt said that she got inspired by watching Toucan birds. “I watched this nature documentary and I watched these toucans were digging into other birds nests and eating their eggs,” Hanawalt said. “That’s kind of what this show is based on. These are real characters, this is about a friendship between 30-year-old birdwomen. I want women in the real world to relate to it even though they are not bird people.”
Steven Yeun will also lend his voice along with Reggie Watts, Tig Notaro, and many others.
The show looks great and I can’t wait to watch it when it comes out.
