An African family was vacationing in China when they became the tourist attraction. The family of six, one man, two women, and three kids were visiting Hangzhou’s famous West Lake when they decided to take a rest on some nearby benches. Soon they were surrounded by locals who asked to take a picture of them reports Shanghaiist. The African tourists in China seemed a little reluctant but they agreed to be the center of attention.
Some passerbys asked to take a picture with them.
While others asked to take a picture with them while holding their baby.
The African family played along and took the pictures with them, even though they seemed bothered by it. They smiled and shook hands. But if you’re not a celebrity and used it to it, I can’t see how they were comfortable with it. Still, they seemed to be good sports about it.
When the reporters asked a Chinese man sitting nearby how he felt about what was happening to the family, he replied that they should be left alone. He felt that it was “inappropriate” and that the family was not there to be photographed, but here to enjoy West Lake. Additionally, he added that the locals should be checking him out instead. “Look how handsome I am, why aren’t they staring at me,” he said.

Considering that China has just recently opened up this isn’t too surprising. When traveling outside the big cities in China, people who don’t look Asian might be seen as a novelty. This is probably the first time they’ve seen an African person in real life. I doubt any harm was meant. So ultimately, no harm no foul. It also gives the African family a story to talk about in the future about how they were famous for a moment in China.
