Bollywood actress allegedly faces racism at New York hotel

A Bollywood star is accusing staff members of racism at the Jane Hotel in New York City. Tanishaa Mukerji was in New York attending the CRY America charity gala on Saturday to help underprivileged children in India. After, she went to a rooftop party at the Jane Hotel in Manhattan’s West Village where the racist incident allegedly happened. She said that one of the employees made racist remarks towards her.

“I don’t understand what triggered it as I was polite, but he turned rude,” she told the Mid-day. “One of the employees, an African-American, said that we looked as if we were fresh off the boat and I couldn’t speak English. That was insulting and blatantly racist. My friends and I were shocked. It’s traumatic to experience this kind of racism in the US; I have never faced it earlier.”

This incident caused Tanishaa Mukerji to go on Twitter to call the Jane hotel the “Shiftiest place ever! Racist horrible people.”

She tried to speak with hotel authorities but they allegedly did nothing to help her. “We didn’t get any support from the hotel staff. I told them to call the cops, but they refused to do so,” she said.

Although, Mukerji tried to capture the incident on video she was too late. Also, her video was cut off after the staffer told her to turn the recorder off. “I was trying to record the incident on my camera,” she said. “The video I posted online ends abruptly because the guy stopped me and told me to switch my recorder off. It’s unfortunate when you experience something like this in a land that stands for rights and liberty. I am saddened that an African-American behaved like this, considering they have experienced discrimination themselves.”

The tweets by Tanishaa Mukerji prompted several of her followers to recount the times they allegedly faced racism at the Jane Hotel.

Twitter user Shilan Samsei recalled a similar situation where a staff member told a group of Iranians to “go back to where we come from.”

While Nikita Bhatia tweeted that she had friends that were victims of “super racist experiences.”
