The biggest boy band in the world has set another record. BTS’s ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ has sold the most records on Korea’s Gaon Music Chart. BTS’s label, Big Hit Entertainment, put out a news release stating that ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ sold 2,033, 475 albums to this date, reports Forbes. This is the most albums sold by an act recorded by Korea’s Gaon Music Chart since it’s birth in 2010.
BTS’s “Love Yourself: Answer”, released on August 24, 2018, became the number 1 album on the Billboard 200 in its first week. It became BTS’s second album to reach the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 this year.
The Korea Music Content Association produces Korea’s Gaon Music Chart. South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism sponsor it with the purpose of creating a national music chart for S. Korea similar to the Billboard Charts in the United States. It began in 2010 and it tracks all sales, domestic and international, from physical and digital sales.
Although there have been several Korean acts that have sold more than BTS, such as Kim Gun Mo and Shin Seung Hun, their numbers were before Korea’s Gaon Music Chart came into fruition. Kim Gun Mo recorded over 3.3 million sales in 1995 with his album Wrongful Encounter. It is Korea’s best selling Album of all time. However, this was before the Gaon Music Chart started recording.
So since 2010, BTS can say they have the album with the most sales. Another day, another record for the 7 boy member band that wasn’t supposed to make it this big. “Love Yourself: Answer” is the last of the “Love Yourself” album trilogy. The band just finished their sold out tour in the United States and Europe for this album. They will go over to Japan to perform but there is a little controversy over a shirt that Jimin wore regarding a mushroom cloud and Korea’s liberation. We shall see how this plays out in the short future.
