China might have it’s first big sci-fi hit movie when “The Wandering Earth” hits theaters early next year, reports The Verge. The movie is based on the book “The Wandering Earth” written by Cixin Liu. The book went on to win the Hugo Award, the highest prize given to a literary work of science fiction.
“The Wandering Earth” is an epic science fiction work about the sun on the verge of explosion. As a result, it will destroy the planets in its solar system including earth. Scientists come up with a plan to move the earth out of the solar system to a new star, Proxima Centauri. In the book, the time spans decades chronicling the problems and the consequences the situation arises.

The film is directed by Guo Fan and stars Wu Jing of Wolf Warrior 2. There were rumors that Amazon wanted to buy the rights and adapt the book for $1,000,000,000. However Chinese studio YooZoo had the rights and were working on the film already.
China has emerged as the second largest box office market. It is believed it will overtake North America soon. Nevertheless, China has been a tough sell for science fiction. American made movies like Star Wars and Star Trek has underperformed in the area. But it seems that will change as Chinese studios have over 10 science fiction movies slated for release next year, reports the Hollywood Reporter.
“The Wandering Earth” is the biggest production and the one most industry people are going to be watching to see if it succeeds. Anne Wu, a science fiction screenwriter, told The Verge that, “there is a growing acceptance of science fiction…people are getting busier, wealthier, and more stressed.” She believes this will cause many people to seek escapism cinema. “Everyone is looking forward to it,” she said. “I am also very concerned about the box office earnings, which will affect the investment situation of [future] Chinese science fictions films.”
The best part is that Fan Bingbing isn’t in it because if she was the movie would have been canceled. I’m really looking forward to seeing this movie.
