Crazy Rich Asians will make more money than originally thought
Crazy Rich Asians the first American studio movie starring an all Asian American cast since the Joy Luck Club is expected to bring in more money than earlier estimates. According to Deadline, the movie is expected to bring in around 30 million dollars in its first 5 days.
Source-Deadline: While tracking sees the Jon M. Chu-directed romance at $26M over five days, some believe that $30M isn’t out of the question at 3,303 locations (that count will go up on Friday), with women around 75% apt to drive business for this feature based on the bestselling book by Kevin Kwan. Already Fandango presales show that Crazy Rich Asians is outselling Universal’s all-femme hit from last summer, Girls Trip at the same point prior to each pic’s opening. Girls Trip debuted to $31.2M and churned a 3.68 multiple for a final stateside of $115.1M
The first projections had Crazy Rich Asians making around 18 million dollars during its first five days but now with strong ticket sales, online buzz, and a high Rottentomatoes score, analysts could see it making more than 30 million dollars.
Online ticketing company Fandango’s Managing Editor Erik Davis said,
“The advance ticket sales for Crazy Rich Asians, are among the best we’ve seen for any comedy this summer. It’s the kind of joyful, celebratory romance that lends itself to repeat viewings, and we expect it to play through the end of the season.”
I always thought early estimates of 18 million dollars was low for the movie and I still think 30 million dollars is on the low side. It was smart for John Chu and the rest of the cast to frame this as some kind of movement and not just a movie. There’s been so much hype about this movie from Asians and how we’ll show the studios that movies starting us can make money.
The movie is now a movement with #Goldopen
There’s also been a twitter movement #Goldopen where rich Asian people buy out the whole theater.
It’s not even just buying out theaters, there are people that will buy your ticket for you anywhere you live if you can’t afford it.
Doing this for the next hour and then I’m done!!! Please please only reach out to me if a movie ticket is a luxury for you. Big props to CRA screenwriter @adeleBlim and The Orville/Family Guy writer @cherrycheva for contributing since I ran out of money midday yesterday

I don’t know but this seems counterintuitive. The idea is that if Crazy Rich Asians makes a lot of money it will open up a lot of doors for Asians. But if you’re tipping the scale and buying tickets for strangers and buying out theaters it’s not like you’re going to be doing this for all Asian movies that come out. Is the same kind of fervor going be there when Searching a movie starring John Cho comes out? Probably not.
Anyways my final guess for the first five days of Crazy Rich Asians will be around 40 million dollars.
