First Picture of Disney’s Mulan

Disney has just released the first picture of Disney’s Mulan played by Liu Yifei. She was cast after a year-long worldwide search to play the heroine Hua Mulan.

Who’s Liu Yifei?

Liu Yifei was born in China under the name of “An Feng”. At the age of 10 she moved to New York City with her mother. She eventually moved back to China at the age of 15 to become an actor and took the stage name Liu Yifei. While attending the Beijing Film Academy she received several offers for television shows. The television shows were a big hit. She eventually moved on to movies, modeling, and music to become one of the biggest stars in China.

Other stars of the Mulan

The film which just started production will also star Donnie Yen, Yoson An, Jason Scott Lee, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Jet Li, and Gong Li.

Donnie Yen will play Mulan’s mentor, Commander Tung.

Yoson An will play Chen Honghui, Mulan’s love interest.

Jason Scott Lee will play Bori Khan, an enemy to Mulan.

Utkarsh Ambudkar will play con artist Skath.

Jet Li will play the emperor of China.

Gong Li will play the villainous witch and main antagonist to Mulan.

What the film is about

The film is based on the Chinese legend Hua Mulan, a popular Chinese folktale. Disney originally released an animated film about Mulan under the same name in 1998. Ming-Na Wen voiced Mulan, a woman who goes undercover as a man to fight in the Imperial Army. Disney released a statement summarizing the story of the upcoming movie.

“The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father as Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.” 

It will be directed by Niki Caro from a script by Rich Jaffa and Amanda Silver. With a reported budget of 300 million dollars, it will be one of the most expensive movies made and the most expensive movie directed by a woman.

The movie is set to release worldwide in theaters in March 2020.
