In the Karocho Ka Khead village in Asind block of Bhilwara district of India, a man thought that he could become a God if he buried himself. Deeraj Karol, a tantrik, told the people in his village that he intended to bury himself on the first day of Nvarata to attain salvation and become a God reports Times Of India. In doing so he would achieve “samadhi” and three days later he would be resurrected and emerge as a God. So the villagers dug up a pit under Karol’s permission.
Deeraj Karol dressed in his finest, soon to be God clothing and descended down into the pit.
He took a seat meditation style and the villagers proceeded to cover the pit with slabs and mud.
Luckily for the man, news of his burial went viral and that’s when police went over to investigate. Officer Mansingh Dev and his team wanted to get the buried man out but they were met with resistance by the villagers who saw them as interfering in a sacred ritual. Dev convinced the elders that the man would die from suffocation if they didn’t get him out. Eventually, the elders agreed and the police were able to save Kharol after he was buried for 8 hours. Kharol was barely conscious when they pulled him from the pit. At a nearby hospital, he made a full recovery.
Kharol gave a statement to the police that it was his wish to perform the “samadhi” and that the villagers were not to blame. But the police have charged Kharol and the villagers with a case and have used this incident to educate other villagers about succumbing to such reckless superstitious acts.

This becomes another example of religion steering people away from sound judgment into stupidity.
