An Indian American Man is being sent to prison for 22 years after he was found guilty of attempted first-degree international homicide of an unborn child. Manishkumar Patel, 45, was sentenced Tuesday in his home state of Wisconsin reports the Daily Mail. He had been on the run since 2007 but was caught in 2017 in New York.
Manishkumar Patel owned 14 gas stations, a hotel, and several other businesses in Wisconsin. In 2001, Manishkumar Patel, who was married at the time, began an affair with physician Darshana Patel.
It was an abusive relationship. Darshana recalls that she had to jump out of a moving car to get away from him. He had slapped her, bruised her eye, and cut her lip. He made her buy him a car and a house him and his wife could live in.
In 2004 they had a son. In 2006, she became pregnant again but miscarried. A year later she became pregnant again. Mr. Patel didn’t want the baby so he spiked her smoothie with RU-486, mifepristone, an abortion drug.
Darshana did not end up drinking the smoothie because she saw Mr. Patel put a powdery substance in her drink and she was suspicious of him after all the abuse. She faked a stomach ache so that she wouldn’t have to drink the smoothie. But she did grab the cup with the powdery residue and sent it to the lab for testing. The powder turned out to be mifepristone and she filed a complaint with the cops against her boyfriend in 2007. Unfortunately, Darshana did end up having a miscarriage a few weeks later.
When police searched Mr. Patel’s home they found an envelope with the abortion pills. Mr. Patel told the cops he got it from India and that he gave Darshana one pill. Patel told the cops that he didn’t want any more kids. He was arrested and bail was set at $750000 in 2007. His friends and family paid the bail and he was released. A little while after he fled to India where he would stay on the run until 2017.
On January 19, 2017, he tried to get back into the United States unnoticed. He first flew to Toronto, Canada and tried to cross the border to Bangor, New York. However, the Customs and Border Patrol(CBP) caught him when they became suspicious of a car they let through. The car Mr. Patel was in had only one person when it went through but a few hours later the CBP noticed a second person in the car. They pulled the car over and soon identified Mr. Patel. He faced seven felonies, including burglary, stalking, and bail jumping, when he was caught. His bail was set to $50 million.
On August 3rd, 2018, Mr. Patel was convicted of first-degree intentional homicide of an unborn child. He copped a plea deal where his bail jumping charge was dropped but he faced a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison. He told the court that he spiked the drink because he didn’t want the baby to have the same medical problems as his son. But he acknowledged in court that a life with medical issues is better than not having a life at all.
Wisconsin has severe consequences for harming a fetus. The “killing of an unborn child” at any stage of pregnancy is considered first-degree intentional homicide. On October 9th he was sentenced to 22 years in jail for attempted first-degree international homicide. Darshana Patel lives with their son who is now 13 years old.
