James Wan to produce Mortal Kombat movie

Horror master James Wan will produce the all new Mortal Kombat movie based on the video game of the same name. The movie will be made for New Line Cinema and will be shot in Australia, reports Variety. The screenplay is written by Greg Russo and will be directed by Simon McQuoid, an award-winning commercial director. This will be McQuoid’s first time directing a movie.

“I’m really happy and excited to be bringing another show back to Australia with Mortal Kombat, especially after having such a great experience filming Aquaman,” Wan said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “Now we get to experience South Australia with its scenic locations and a wealth of artistic talent to work with. It will be perfectly suited for this fantasy-action project.”

James Wan is a 42-year-old Malaysian-Chinese filmmaker best known for his horror movies. He created the Saw and The Conjuring franchises. He has recently established himself as a blockbuster director after he helmed the Furious 7 and Aquaman. Both movies went onto earn more than a billion dollars at the box office.

Mortal Kombat was a controversial video game when it came out in 1992. Critics of the game lambasted it for its excessive violence and its depiction of blood. In the game, a fighter would use a “Fatality” finishing move to kill his or her opponent.

This outrage from conservatives paved the way for the creation of the ESRB rating system for all video games. Still, it became a huge hit and had an even bigger cultural impact that changed gaming culture. The original game spawned many successful sequels.

Mortal Kombat also inspired two films in the 1990s. The first was Mortal Kombat in 1995, and its sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, in 1997.

According to Box Office Mojo, the first movie, did okay at the box office making $122 million, despite bard reviews from movie critics.

Its sequel, Mortal Kombat Annihilation, did worse with the critics and consequently did half the sales at the box office. It only brought in $51 million.

It’s going to be really interesting to see James Wan try to make a Mortal Kombat movie. Although Wan won’t be directing, as long as his producing hand is strong, it should be at the very least a fun movie.
