The Philippines and Canda might go to war over trash. Yes, trash. President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines is sick of Canada’s trash and he wants them to take it back. The trash he’s talking about was shipped by a Canadian Company in 2013 and 2014. The Philippines agreed to take the trash of recyclable plastic, but when officials opened the shipping containers, they found electronics, kitchen trash, and adult diapers, reports Global News. The more than 100 shipping containers of trash are rotting away in Manila right now and if Canada doesn’t take it back, Duterte said that he’ll declare war on Canada and deliver the trash back to them himself. “We’ll declare war against them,” Duterte said on Tuesday, according to NPR.
President Duterte went off about the trash at the end of a news conference about the two earthquakes that shook the Philippines.
“I want a boat prepared. I’ll give a warning to Canada, maybe next week, that they better pull that thing out — or I will set sail,” he said. “I cannot understand why they’re making us a dump site.”
Duterte doesn’t care what the Canadians do with the trash as long as they take it back. “Eat it if you want to,” he said. “Prepare and celebrate, because your garbage is coming home.”
Canada replied to Duterte’s remarks by saying that they are working with the Philippines to find the best solution. They said that they have new regulations in dealing with hazardous waste shipments and they will make sure the waste “is processed in an environmentally responsible way.”
Siding with the Philippines is an environmental Canadian law firm that accused Canada of violating the international Basel Convention. It is an international treaty which prohibits developed countries from dumping their hazardous materials into less developed countries.
As for Rodrigo’s Duterte and his threat of war over trash, John Holmes, the Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines told ABS-CBN, “I won’t comment on the specific words of the president or his tone, but I will say this: Our prime minister committed and has recommitted to resolving this issue, including the waste back to Canada.”
The president of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte vs the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau, now that’s going to be a great fight. They got to put this on Pay-Per-View and the loser has to take the trash. It’ll make millions of dollars and it will be a boost for their economies. Although, it should be an easy fight for Duterte because he’s such a tough guy. However, Justin Trudeau has some boxing skills and he did beat up Senator Patrick Brazeau, so maybe it won’t be that easy.
Whatever happens, just call the fight, “Taking out the Trash.”
