A suspect has been arrested after the brutal knockout of 39-year-old Christopher Matthews was caught on surveillance video. Matthews was waiting for a Lyft vehicle with his wife when he approached a car he thought was his ride. A man emerged from the car and sucker punched Matthews sending him to the ground unconscious. Police arrested 25-year-old Jiacheng Fang in San Jose on October 16th in San Jose, reports CBS SF Bay Area.
On September 8, 2018, around 11:22 p.m, Matthews approached a white 4 door sedan thinking it was his rideshare.
The suspect gets out of the car and punches Matthews in his face knocking him out. Matthews falls to the ground and hits the back of his head on the cement.
The suspect then drives off. Matthews was left with blood coming out of his ears, nose, and the back of his head.
Matthews was taken to Alta Bates Summit Medical Center where doctors diagnosed him with traumatic brain injury. James Fong on behalf of Rebecca Matthews has put a GoFundMe to help with the hospital bills and the ongoing recovery process the insurance doesn’t cover. So far they have raised over $70,000. Christopher Matthews is still suffering problems from the assault. He has memory problems along with motor skills of the brain and doctors are not sure he will fully recover.
Christopher Matthew’s wife, Rebecca Matthews, told CBS SF Bay Area news that, “Will I be able to ever leave my husband with the kids alone? I don’t know. Will I be able to let him drive and not worry? I don’t know?” When asked what she told their kids she said, “I’ve told them that daddy has a boo boo on his head. And you know he’s in the hospital and the doctors are going to help him get better.”
The San Francisco authorities have charged Jiacheng Fang with two felonies. One charge of assault with force likely causing great bodily injury and battery causing serious bodily injury.
