The Puyuma Express train was carrying 366 passengers in eight carriages when it came off the tracks heading to its destination, Taitung, a city on Taiwan’s southeast coast. It is unsure what caused the accident at this time but Taiwan’s central government stated the train went off track at 4:50 p.m. local time. The first car flipped over leading the rest of the carriages to go off track. Most of the deaths were people in the first car. “Their train car turned over. They were crushed, so they died right away,” Chen Chung-chi, the Ministry of National Defense said.

Local media reports that the conductor surnamed You said that the train hit an unknown object which caused the derailment. Twitter user @WilliamYang120 tweeted, ‘Passengers said the conductor hit the brake three times and the train “sort of stopped and restarted several times in the process.” When it drove past Xinma station in Yilan county, passengers heard a loud “bang” at a big turn before the cars were thrown off the rail.’
