Two men were arrested for allegedly killing a 32-year-old woman in a parking lot at a Garden Grove shopping center. The two men allegedly tried to rob Nga Ngoc Nguyen of her purse when she fell under the getaway car and was run over. Giovanni Solomon Guy, 20, and Gregory Walker, 19, of Los Angeles were charged with robbery and murder on Friday, while Maurice Brown Jr, 19, was charged with one felony count of robbery, reports ABC 7. If convicted, the two murder suspects could face the death penalty.
On May 8, around 9:30 am, the suspects drove to the Garden Grove Plaza in an SUV. Surveillance video mounted outside one of the stores captured the robbery and murder of Nga Ngoc Nguyen.
The two struggled with the purse as Nguyen was repeatedly tossed to the ground. Nguyen had the purse’s strap tightly wrapped around her wrist. She got dragged all the way to the suspect’s getaway car.
The suspect got in the passenger side of the car with Nguyen still holding onto her purse. The driver took off and Nguyen was dragged on the pavement on the passenger side. She got sucked beneath the SUV and was run over.
Nguyen was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The LAPD robbery task force had been surveilling the suspects before the incident. The three men were arrested after a police pursuit which ended where the 110 Freeway and Century Boulevard meet.
Walker and Guy were out on bail during the time of the murder. Walker was charged with two felony counts of robbery and one felony count of burglary. Guy was charged with one count of carrying a concealed firearm and one felony count of robbery.
Gregory Anthony Walker and Giovanni Guy were each charged with one count of murder with a special circumstance because it took place during a robbery. If convicted, both men face life in prison but prosecutors could pursue the death penalty.
Brown faces one felony count of robbery and if convicted faces a minimum of two years in prison. The investigation is still ongoing.
Orange County District Attorney, Todd Spitzer said, “The Orange County District Attorney is taken aback by the brutal and callous acts of the defendants which resulted in the death of Nga Nguyen. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office would like to extend its sincerest condolences to the loved ones of Nga Nguyen.”
